The Practice

The practice was established by Fred Norman in December 1975 as a 2 surgery practice and Tony Reading joined the practice, as an associate, soon afterwards in March 1976. We soon expanded to accommodate a third surgery and a dedicated Panoral x ray room. We were joined by another associate, Bob Hansom, in 1977. Following this we formed a three man partnership in 1978.

We continued our expansion with the addition of a fourth surgery and Kerry Tolhurst joined the partnership in 1979.

In 1990 we bought additional land adjacent to the practice, and in 1991  built an extension to include a fifth surgery, enlarged waitingReception room accommodation, and improved reception / office facilities. This extension work included a complete refurbishment of the existing surgery facilities, to produce a modern, well equipped 5 surgery practice, with all surgeries being air conditioned.

The practice is fully computerized with full clinical records, appointment book and 3 surgeries are equipped with digital radiography and intra oral cameras. We were one of the first practices to be certified for the EDI link to the DPB having been authorized for transmission in October 1991. All terminals have full internet access and e-mails, both internal and external.

We have an established experienced staff including 5 qualified DSA’s and three Receptionists, currently a further 2 staff members are completing the DSA course. The staff are very loyal to the practice with many of our staff being with us in excess of 10 years.

All the partners at the practice have a long established commitment to providing a high standard of ethical dentistry both within the NHS and also privately

We have the benefit of one of our former associates, Kevin Jones, who is now a consultant in restorative dentistry for Barnet Health Authorityl continuing to attend at the practice on a regular basis, and he can advise on the more complex restorative cases.

The practice is conveniently located close to Wisbech town centre and adjacent to the main town centre car park, which enjoys the bonus of free parking.

History of Wisbech

Clarkson Memorial The history of the development of Wisbech was closely linked with the reclamation of the Fens for agriculture, which turned one of the least hospitable parts of England into one of the most productive. The drained marshes lead to tremendous growth and prosperity in Georgian and Victorian periods. Commerce has flourished into modern times, 5,000 acres of orchard and garden land within a seven mile radius of the town make it the richest fruit and flower growing area of East Anglia.

Thomas Clarkson, founder of the anti slavery movement, and Octavia Hill, founder of the National Trust, remain the town's most famous son and daughter.

Wisbech Character

The present day character of Wisbech is mainly that of a prosperous Georgian market town.
The North Brink, and the Crescent and Museum Square must be among the finest examples of Georgian street architecture in the country, being used as a setting for several period productions. The town grew up around its port, trading from medieval times but flourishing commercially with the draining of the Fens in the 17th century. The years 1700-1850 witnessed tremendous growth, which established the fine buildings seen today. Whilst the port has declined in importance for commerce, the development of a large floating marina has enhanced the River.  Wisbech remains the market centre for a large agricultural and horticultural area.

Wisbech boasts one of the best real ale pubs in the region and one of the oldest traditional family breweries, helping to quench the thirst of the local population, currently about 38,000.

Of particular note in the town are buildings including Elgood's Wisbech park historic brewery, Peckover House and Gardens, the Old Market, the Market Place and the Crescent area (including the Wisbech and Fenland Museum).  Octavia Hill, one of the founders of the National Trust, lived at No. 8 South Brink There's a museum commemorating her life and work in housing reform. The Angles Centre, which is one of the oldest working theatres in the country,  presents theatre and exhibitions all year. Two modern shopping centres complement the traditional retail areas. There are sports clubs, charitable organizations and special interest societies within the community. An indoor swimming pool and sports complex offers a variety of activities.

Housing is probably a little cheaper than most East Anglian centres. There are good schools, including an excellent independent Grammar School providing private education from 5-18. Three medical practices within the town and two nearby village practices provide the area with its primary medical care.

Situated on the A47 and A1101, the town can be reached within half an hour by car from Peterborough and King's Lynn. Cambridge and Norwich are less than an hour away. The sea is some 11 miles away and the coast provides miles of unspoilt beaches, sand dunes and estuaries. There are a number of Bird Sanctuaries drawing 'twitchers' from a wide area. The Sandringham Estate with its heathland and forestry walks is half an hour away. Coarse fishing in the Fens has always been famous for its catches of eel and pike.
